Character Analysis

Grew up... as a member of the illustrious Hayabusa Ninja Clan. Ryu’s upbringing under his father and clan leader Jo Hayabusa was harsh and full of sorrow, but it molded him into a masterful ninja warrior.
Living... in Hayabusa village. In this hidden community at the base of Mount Fuji, Ryu and members of his clan can live and train in peace.
Profession... ninja. As a descendent of the Dragon Clan, it is Ryu’s duty to protect the world from dark forces. As a modern-day ninja, sometimes this even means teaming up with groups like the CIA. His skills have earned him many nicknames like “The Ultimate Ninja” and “The Singular Super Ninja.”
Relationship Status... in a relationship. Ryu is romantically involved with American CIA operative Irene Lew, a capable warrior in her own right. The nature of their jobs, traveling the world fighting evil, gives them plenty of excuses to be together.
Challenge... defeating the dark forces that threaten the world. Ryu wields the legendary Dragon Sword, which is capable of defeating very powerful demonic forces. But they won’t go down without a fight. However, Ryu isn’t that concerned because, as he says, “Darkness is fated to eventually be destroyed.”
Personality... cold, determined, and wise. Although Ryu is extremely deadly, he isn’t fueled by hatred. Rather, he views himself more as a force of nature – often times tranquil, but capable of great destructive force when needed. Ryu violently slaughters his enemies without mercy, but he is very kind and gentle toward members of his clan. He does everything in his power to keep them safe from the many evil enemies they’ve made, like the rival Black Spider Ninja Clan.

Dead or Alive 2 is a fighting game in the Dead or Alive series. The gameplay of DOA2, and all subsequent Dead or Alive games, borrows heavily from the Virtua Fighter series, but makes some key changes that drastically changes the way Dead or Alive is played in comparison to Virtua Fighter. In DOA2, the basis of the entire fighting system is the circular relationship between three types of moves: holds, throws, and blows.The other defining feature of DOA2, aside from holds/throws/blows, is its stun system. In DOA2 many attacks upon hitting will inflict a stun on the opponent. While stunned, the opponent cannot attack, and cannot guard, but they can hold.

Dead or Alive 3 is a fighting game in the Dead or Alive series. It was released exclusively on the Xbox as a launch title. The basic gameplay controls and commands remain essentially unchanged from Dead or Alive 2; however, some minor tweaks have been added to the game system in the form of increased counter periods, unrestricted 3D-axis movement, and less emphasis on juggling combos. All these gameplay enhancements make the game more suited for beginners, and makes the artificial intelligence much more forgiving. Finally, the game incorporated less damage percentiles in counter maneuvers, added four new characters to the roster, and game's tag controls were changed to insert Attack Change, a new tag system feature where the fighting character can switch places with his or her tag partner, which can then unleash an attack while a character is jumping in.

Dead or Alive 4 is a fighting game and the fourth major title in the Dead or Alive video game series, its plot following the events of the 2001 title Dead or Alive 3. Dead or Alive 4 features 22 playable characters and many multi-tiered and interactive fighting arenas. DOA4 has a number of updates in reference to previous titles. Characters' move lists have been vastly updated and four new characters have been added to the fighting roster, with returns from a couple of past characters as well. The counter system has been tightened, making the window for counters shorter and more difficult to execute, and the amount of damage that counters inflict has been changed.

Dead or Alive is a fighting game and the first entry in Team Ninja's long-running Dead or Alive series. Its most defining features were its speed and countering system. Dead or Alive put an emphasis on speed, and relied more on simplistic commands and reaction time. Furthermore, its countering system was the first in the fighting genre to utilize different commands that corresponded to each type of attack. There are two kinds of holds, an Offensive Hold (OH) and a Defensive Hold (DH). The latter are executed by holding back or forward on the directional pad along with the guard input to either force away or counter-damage an opponent. The Playstation port of the game was later backported for arcade and titled Dead or Alive++.
