Character Analysis

(Avoiding Spoilers)

Grew Up… in the Shire, eight years younger than his best friend and fellow hobbit, Merry. Once the two of them were old enough to start trouble, that’s what they did on the regular, along with their close friend and Pippin’s cousin, Frodo Baggins. The three drank, ate, and stole mushrooms from local farmers.

Living… as part of the Fellowship of the Ring, a ragtag group of adventurers dead-set on bearing the Ring of Power to its final resting place (hopefully) in Mount Doom. Pippin’s role is accompanying Frodo, who is the true bearer of the Ring. At first, Pippin can offer little more than his companionship. Yet he slowly proves himself to be more clever than the clumsy fool he’s thought to be, such as when even Gandalf curses him as a “fool of a Took!” Which is saying a lot, considering how foolish other Took hobbits are.

Profession… none. Too young to have a full-fledged profession, Pippin follows his friends wherever they may go, even if that means going on a death-defying quest across Middle Earth.

Interests… mushrooms, ale, and fireworks. The troublesome hobbit steals the wizard Gandalf’s magical fireworks and almost burns himself to a crisp in the process, during Bilbo Baggins’ 111th birthday party.

Relationship Status… single. His interest in women (or female hobbits, anyway) is not yet in full swing, but he’s still young.

Challenge… remaining with the Fellowship. It quickly becomes very difficult for the group to stay together, as danger lurks around every corner. But Pippin is sure that he needs to stick with Frodo: “We hobbits ought to stick together, and we will. I shall go unless they chain me up. There must be someone with intelligence in the party.”

Personality… cheerful, bumbling, and not the sharpest sword in the armory. Pippin’s clumsiness gets the party into hairy situations more often than anyone would like. When they’re in the mines of Moria, he accidentally knocks a skeleton down a well, alerting evil orcs about their location. But he more than makes up for his occasional foolishness with loyalty. And as the quest continues, he becomes far braver than he, or anyone else, could have ever imagined.
