Overview... a milkman and patriarch of a family living in the Orthodox Jewish section of Anatevka, a town in the Russian Empire. Teyve is trying to find a husband for his daughter Tzeitel. The last match the matchmaker found for her was bald, which upset her. Alas, a poor girl without a dowry can't be particular. In Tevye’s view, a husband is not to look at – a husband is to get.
Personality... traditional and sharp-tongued, yet compassionate. He is a simple man trying to scratch out a pleasant, simple life without breaking his neck. It is of upmost importance to him to maintain his Jewish traditions, for they show his constant devotion to God. Now that his daughter is not following his wishes, he’s forced to reckon with the changing times. Yet somehow, in spite of all the hardship, he manages to maintain his good humor.
