Character Analysis

(Avoiding Spoilers)

Grew up… in the United States with British parents, making her a dual citizen. Mac is a sophisticated, worldly, and thoughtful journalist who grew up in two cultures, which gave her a unique, nuanced perspective on the world.

Living… in New York City. Mac has just returned from the Middle East, where she and her team were covering the Green Zone in Baghdad. Returning to normal life in the United States has been odd for Mac, who received emotional and physical scars from her time in the field.

Profession… Executive Producer of News Night with Will McAvoy. Though the show’s anchor, Will McAvoy, had some personal objections to Mac’s presence in the newsroom because they used to date, even he would admit that she has injected a new energy into the program.

Interests… taking back political discourse from the hands of morons and pundits. Mac believes in: “Reclaiming the Fourth Estate. Reclaiming journalism as an honorable profession.” She wants News Night to be “a nightly newscast that informs a debate worthy of a great nation. Civility, respect, and a return to what’s important.”

Relationship Status… single, regretfully. Mac used to be in a relationship with her current anchor, Will, but it ended badly. Somehow the two have found it within themselves to put aside personal differences so that they can work together. In the process, they’ve discovered that they still make a good team. But will they become a “team” again outside the office?

Challenge… fixing News Night and provide an example of good, honest and fair journalism in an age of gossip and slander. Mac wants to find a place in cable news where people can all come together. She also wants to prove to her ex-boyfriend, Will, that she’s capable of being true to him, both professionally and personally.

Personality… strong, proud, and honest. Mac is dedicated and idealistic. Everyone in the newsroom would agree that she’s the driving force of News Night. Without this two-time Peabody winner, there would be no show. Or at least a far less noble one.
