Katara

Grew up…in the South Pole, as part of the Southern Water Tribe. When Katara was eight, her mother died protecting her from Fire Nation soldiers. Since then Katara has had to do all the household chores, while her older brother led the tribe.

Living… in a new era. Recently, Katara and her brother Sokka found the Avatar suspended in ice, and they freed him. The Avatar is a magical figure with the power to bend, or manipulate, all four elements. He vanished a hundred years ago, but now they’ve found him. Sokka and Katara are traveling with Avatar Aang, hoping to defeat the evil Fire Nation.

Profession… maternal figure. Katara was in charge of the household back at the South Pole, and now that they’re on the road, she’s the one keeping the two boys on track.

Interests… waterbending. Katara is the last person in her tribe who can waterbend, or manipulate water to her will. She wants to learn more about how to use it, but there’s no one to teach her. She hopes that traveling with the Avatar will enable her to find someone.

Relationship Status… single. She’s still young, and all the eligible guys left the tribe to fight in the war against the Fire Nation.

Challenge…mastering her waterbending and helping Aang defeat the Fire Nation. All three heroes are still young, and the Fire Nation is immensely powerful – and already seeking Aang. Their first challenge is to travel to the other side of the world to learn waterbending from the Northern Water Tribe, but that won’t be the end of their journey.

Personality… maternal, practical, and idealistic. Katara cares a lot about principles and doing the right thing, and she has faith that things will work out if they follow their consciences. Sometimes she doesn’t have much of a sense of fun, something that causes her to clash with both Sokka and Aang. But it’s Katara who will keep them on track in their quest. And she’s kind of scary when she wants to be.
