Jimmy Dugan

Living... out of a suitcase. He's always lived on the road for baseball, which is what he is most passionate about. As he says, "Baseball is what gets inside you. It's what lights you up, you can't deny that."

Profession... manager of a girls' baseball team, the Rockford Peaches, in the All-American Girls' Professional Baseball League. With so many men away for WWII, candy magnate and Chicago Cubs owner Walter Harvey started an all-girls league. Jimmy is not sure what he thinks about girls taking over baseball. As he says, "I always thought girls are to sleep with after the game, not to coach during the game."

Interests... drinking – at least until recently. But he doesn't drink much since he took over the Peaches and dried out. Jimmy was a terrific big-league slugger in his day, but he gave away five years at the end his career to drink. And now there isn't anything he wouldn't give to get back any one day of it.

Relationship Status... not that great considering he is surrounded by girls. Let’s just say he’s “single.” He has a connection with his best player, Dottie, but she is married to someone else. Jimmy has been married twice before with no children, unless you count one of those wives.

Challenge... trying to win the World Series. But he doesn't think they will have a shot without Dottie who wants to go back to Oregon that her husband has returned from the War. If she wants a life of making babies, he's in no position to tell anyone how to live. But he thinks she'll regret it for the rest of her life if she leaves before the season’s over.

Personality... funny and crass. Until a few months ago everybody thought he was bitter and washed-up, and it was hard to argue. But he's starting to prove them wrong. Jimmy never imagined he’d be managing a bunch of girls, but this job might be just what he needed to get back to living.
