Character Analysis

(Avoiding Spoilers)

Profession… former general of the fire nation. Iroh was once revered as one of the most knowledgeable, proficient and effective military forces of his age. However, when the greatest achievement of his career, breaking down the great wall of Ba Sing Se, led to the death of his only son, the crown Prince stepped down from his military duties. And after his younger brother Ozai replaced him as general and banished his own son, Zukol, Iroh left the royal palace to act as his nephew's mentor and guardian.

Interests… tea and pai sho. In his old age, Iroh wants nothing more than to relax, play games and enjoy his homemade tea. As he says, "Sharing tea with a fascinating stranger is one of life's true delights." He is also quite fond of sharing his wealth of wisdom with those around him.

Challenge... his complicated relationship with his nephew. With the passing of his son, Iroh is also very interested in his nephew, Zuko. As Zuko’s mentor and uncle, Iroh cares deeply for the banished Prince and is always by his side. He aims to ease the rage burning inside him so that he can find his true self. Their relationship has led him into conflict with the Avatar on several occasions. For the most part, however, Iroh doesn’t share his nephew's determination to capture the Avatar. While Zuko is benefiting from Iroh’s mentorship and wisdom, Zuko is helping Iroh just as much. As Iroh says, "Sometimes, the best way to solve your own problems is to help someone else.”

Personality... caring and wise. As a master fire bender and former general with the given nickname ‘dragon of the west,’ Iroh may seem like a threatening individual. But he is actually a kind soul. The Prince’s kooky-tea-loving uncle goes out of his way to help those around him, imparting his great wisdom to those who need it most.
