Overview... a southern planter and slave-owner. Epps is a religious man who believes he has a biblical right to beat his slaves and control their lives indefinitely. His wife is jealous of his relationship with Patsey, a young slave, on whom Epps dotes but also continues to beat and humiliate.
Personality… sadistic, religious, and ferocious. Epps is a drunk who uses violence to quell his own inner demons. When Solomon Northup, a free man condemned to a life of slavery, joins his plantation, Edwin Epps seeks to bring the defiant slave down to his own level.
