Character Analysis

(Avoiding Spoilers)

Living... with her mother, Sophia, and two new friends, Blanche and Rose, in a house in Miami. She used to live with her husband, Stanley, but after almost 40 years of marriage, he left her behind for a much younger flight attendant.

Profession... high school substitute teacher. A star student back when she was in high school, Dorothy uses her new job as an opportunity for her to use those academic skills again. She had to abandon that life after having kids so young and marrying Stanley forced her into motherhood much earlier than she would have wanted.

Interests… reading, singing, slinging sarcastic barbs at her friends. She even once takes her biting wit to the stage to perform stand-up about growing older.

Relationship Status... divorced from Stanley. She never thought she could do better when they were younger, but now she knows he’s a cheater and that anyone new would be a step up. So she’s out dating and looking for love while her mother expresses her disapproval at any potential boyfriends.

Challenge... starting over. For the first time in forever, she’s no longer with Stanley and back with her mother. Will she treat it as an opportunity like the adventurous Blanche, or will she retreat from the newfound independence like the cautious Rose?

Personality... tough, self-deprecating, compassionate. It’s difficult for Dorothy to get over the scars of insecurity that marked her time with Stanley, but she’s making progress with the help of her friends who have become as close as sisters. Of course, her intensity scared them a little when they met, but they’ve all grown wiser and grown closer in their years of living together.
