Character Analysis

(Avoiding Spoilers)

Grew up… in Oregon. Malarkey had only just begun his freshman year of college when the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor. He tried to enlist in the Marines, but was turned down due to dental issues. Malarkey wanted to fight among the best, so he volunteered for the Airborne.

Living… day-to-day on the frontline in Europe. His fellow soldiers know him for his sense of humor and his bad cooking. “Sir, if you have a reservation someplace else, I’d be happy to go with you,” Malarkey tells an officer who complains about his Irish-tinged cuisine.

Profession… Technical Sergeant in “Easy” Company, 2nd Battalion, 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 101st Airborne Division.

Interests… finding a real German Luger to take home as a souvenir. Malarkey will go to extreme measures to find one of these precious pistols. At one point, he charges out to the battlefield amidst machine gun fine to inspect the body of a dead German soldier.

Challenge… surviving the war so that he can return to Oregon and finish college. Malarkey, like most of the other soldiers, just wants to get home safely.

Personality… good humored and cheerful, despite the gloomy atmosphere of war. Donald likes to banter with his fellow soldiers, who often poke fun of the fact that his last name, Malarkey, is slang for “B.S.” He has a good sense of humor, and often makes fun of himself. “Crazy fools, the Irish,” he once says. Nobody who knows Malarkey disagrees.
