Betty Suarez

Grew Up… in Queens, in a loud but loving blue-collar family. Determined to succeed, Betty was the first Suarez to graduate from college, receiving a degree from Queen’s College.

Living… in the same house she grew up in, with her dad Ignacio, her sister Hilda, and Hilda’s son Justin. It’s pretty tight in the small walkup, but that’s how it’s always been. Betty is close with her family, regularly meeting up for dinner and watching television together. They have become increasingly close ever since Betty’s mother passed away.

Profession…  personal assistant. Betty recently landed a job as the aide to the new Editor in Chief of Mode, a high-end fashion magazine. Betty has always wanted to work in the publishing world and according to her, “This job is the only chance I'll ever have at getting there.” As a result, Betty puts all her effort into doing well in the job, though she clashes – both figuratively and literally – with the uppity, cutthroat world of high style.

Interests… reading, watching TV, and spending time with her family. Betty has been interested in magazines her whole life, so now that she has the chance to work for one, she spends even more time than ever pouring over photo shoots, analyzing layouts, and honing her skills. When she isn’t working, she likes to watch telenovelas with her sister and mentor her fashion-conscious nephew Justin.

Relationship Status… single. Having recently broken up with a nice neighborhood guy after he cheated on her, Betty isn’t looking for relationships, preferring to focus on her career.

Challenge… knowing when to fit in and when to stand out. Betty, because of her humble upbringing, doesn’t quite know how to navigate the cunning office politics that govern Mode. In a business where appearances are seemingly all that matter and nothing is as it seems, Betty struggles to adapt to the fast pace without losing touch with who she really is.

Personality… warm and enthusiastic. Betty has worked hard for everything she’s accomplished, and she enjoys every minute of it. Able to smile in the face of incredibly difficult tasks, Betty is upbeat and positive even when things go wrong. Unfortunately, this means that people often bring their problems to Betty for help, which can leave her overwhelmed and stressed. Adaptable and clever, she can come up with solutions to tricky problems, but only after someone close to her calms her nerves.
