Ratchet & Clank focuses on Ratchet, a furry alien creature, and Clank, a nerdy little robot, going on a quest to find Captain Qwark and ultimately to help save the galaxy. Also of note is that the story is non-linear, requiring the player to return to previous levels to complete objectives and to choose between multiple paths forward.

The player starts with one mask but different masks, each with a unique effect, are unlocked as the game progresses. After each mission the performance of the player is graded and he is given a score, which can unlock new masks and weapons, if the score is sufficiently high.
