Character Analysis

(Avoiding Spoilers)

Living… in a dump. Literally. Ralph is the villain of Fix-It Felix, a popular game at Litwak’s Arcade. While the rest of the Niceland villagers live in the apartment building, Ralph’s role as the bad guy gets him a lot of flak and he is forced to settle in a nearby garbage pile.

Visiting… the game Hero’s Duty. Ralph’s just about had it with Niceland. The citizens mistreat him and exclude him from their parties. Plus, there’s that whole living in an actual dump thing. But things are looking up. Gene, the mayor, has agreed to let Ralph live in the penthouse if he is able to win a medal. Hero’s Duty has one and that’s where Ralph is going next.

Profession… wrecker. With his giant fists and towering figure, Ralph is a force to be reckoned with. (Pardon the pun.) There isn’t a thing in the video game universe that he can’t break. His job is to destroy things so that Felix, the protagonist of Fix-It Felix, can fix them. Even though Ralph is a genuinely nice guy, the villagers just think of him as a hot-tempered nuisance and constantly mistreat him.

Interests… in his free time, Ralph attends Bad-Anon, a support group for video game antagonists, in order to cope with his job dissatisfaction. After every session, Ralph and his fellow villains repeat the Bad Guy affirmation: “I’m bad and that’s good. I will never be good and that’s not bad. There’s no one I’d rather be than me.” Unfortunately, Ralph doesn’t believe a word of it.

Relationship Status… single. The Nicelanders don’t even like Ralph, let alone find him attractive. To be fair, he is a bit of a clumsy hulk. And again, there is that living in an actual dump thing. That puts a bit of a damper on the love life.

Challenge… winning a medal and the respect of his fellow Nicelanders. All Ralph wants is to be appreciated. He works just as hard as Felix to make Fix-It Felix fun for the arcade goers, but Ralph gets no praise because of his role as the bad guy. Maybe things will change if he gets that medal. Unfortunately, Hero’s Duty is not an easy game to win.

Personality… sweet and humble, but with some major anger-management issues. Hey, you’d be mad too if everyone either shuns or insults you, especially when you work so hard! If the Nicelanders took some time to get to know Ralph, they would see that that he really is a nice guy and maybe start appreciating him a bit more. Alas, they don’t, at least not yet.
