Character Analysis

(Avoiding Spoilers)

Grew up…in the small town of Risembool. Winry’s parents were surgeons, and they left to help in the Ishbal war. They died there, and Winry moved in with her grandmother, Pinako.  Winry has been friends with her fellow Risembool residents, brothers Alphonse and Edward Elric, from an early age.

Living… with her grandmother. Pinako is an expert with automail, mechanical body parts that can be used as replacements for individuals who have lost body parts. Winry learned some medicinal theory from her parents’ books, but she has followed in her grandmother’s footsteps. They sometimes argue like any family members, but they are very dedicated to each other.

Profession… automail mechanic. Winry works with her grandmother and has since she was young. When her childhood friend Ed’s arm and leg were lost, she was the one who created his automail replacements. She still does all his repairs, even though he’s moved out of Risembool.

Interests… automail. In fact, she’s a bit of an automail fangirl, positively drooling over new equipment or innovations. Not very many girls – heck, not very many people, period – will get starry-eyed at the mention of nuts and bolts. But Winry will.

Relationship Status… single. She’s really close to Ed, but so far, there’s nothing romantic between them.

Challenge…helping Ed and his brother Al. They’ve lost a lot, and Winry can sympathize. She’s always tried to provide them with a sense of home. Not to mention the lesser challenge of constantly repairing Ed’s automail when he breaks it.

Personality…kind, enthusiastic, and stubborn. Winry has a lot of energy, and isn’t afraid to use it all on the things she loves. Like Ed, she hates backing down from a fight, but she’s a little more tactful than he is, probably because her high empathy allows her to understand why people are doing what they’re doing. Although she’s a tough mechanic and a tomboy, she’s very sensitive to other people, constantly worrying about them.
