Character Analysis

(Avoiding Spoilers)

Visiting... the FBI Academy in Quantico, Virginia. Wendy is invited there to do some consulting work.

Profession... psychology professor. She’s working towards tenure at Boston University, and she’s published a book about white-collar criminals.

Interests... the intersection of sociopathy and fame.

Relationship Status... secretly dating Annaliese Stilman, the head of the Psychology Department at Boston University. Annaliese is adamant about the importance of keeping a low profile for personal and professional security.

Challenge... profiling the mind of a serial killer. FBI agents Bill Tench and Holden Ford approach Wendy about a revolutionary new project they’ve been working on: Interviewing incarcerated “sequence killers” (a.k.a. serial killers) in order to establish a psychological profile of these types of criminals. They offer Wendy a consulting position at their Behavioral Science Unit, where she’d be formalizing the study and ensuring it’s supported by science. As Wendy immediately and excitedly realizes, “These men are virtually impossible to study. Yet you have found a way to study them in near perfect laboratory conditions.” While Bill and Holden are focused on improving law enforcement procedures, Wendy thinks the study could have far-reaching value in “behavioral science, early detection, criminology, you name it.”

Personality... cool, calm, and collected. Wendy is a consummate professional who always tries to maintain an objective point of view on her work. As a closeted gay woman living in the 1970s, she knows she can’t rock the boat or draw too much attention to herself. However, Wendy also has supreme confidence in her own intelligence and the value she brings to her work. Above all, Wendy has a deep belief in science and the scientific method. She prefers to operate based on facts, rather than emotions.
