Character Analysis

(Avoiding Spoilers)

Living… in Southern California. Walter spends most of his time at the local bowling alley, knocking down pins with his friends The Dude and Donny, and getting into loud screaming matches with anyone who won’t follow the rules.

Profession… owner of Sobchak Security. He uses the combat knowledge he accumulated during a stint fighting in the Vietnam War. But while his tour of duty set him up for a career in security, it also irrevocably messed with his head and left him paranoid and angry.

Interests… bowling, Judaism, and handguns. He’ll bring a gun to the alley but he won’t bowl on Friday night. That’s Shabbos, the Jewish day of rest.

Relationship Status… divorced from Cynthia after five years of marriage. He converted to Judaism for her and stuck with his new religion after the relationship ended. He also watches her dog when she’s out of town – he hasn’t totally moved on.

Challenge… helping The Dude through a sticky situation. The Dude, aka Jeffrey Lebowski, was attacked by two criminals who peed on his rug. Turns out they were looking for a different Jeffrey Lebowski, a wealthy man whose wife is missing and who has dragged the Dude into an extremely convoluted criminal conspiracy. Walter is along for the ride in hopes of scoring the other Lebowski’s ransom money.

Personality… stubborn, aggressive, and a mentally unhinged believer in rules. When his bowling opponent steps over the line during a roll, Walter refuses to credit him with eight pins, takes out a handgun, and yells, “Am I the only one here who gives a s--- about the rules?!” Walter has a lot of anger that is generally bubbling pretty close to the surface.
