Character Analysis

(Avoiding Spoilers)

Living… in his dorm room at Coolidge College. Van Wilder has been living out the last days of his youth for a few extra years now, but he’s learned a lot over the course of his seven years in college.

Profession… full time party animal. Van isn’t quite ready for real life just yet; he’s still enjoying his student days. He doesn’t see the point of constantly thinking about the future, and tries to just enjoy where he’s at, telling his detractors, “If you’re always thinking about the future, then you kinda forget about the present.”

Interests… partying, girls, and college. Van enjoys the freedom of his life at Coolidge. He knows that life after graduation comes with far more responsibilities and limits – but as long as he’s at Coolidge, he can continue to do pretty much whatever (and whoever) he wants.

Relationship Status… single. Although, many of the women at Coolidge College are carnally acquainted with the infamous Van Wilder. Currently, Van’s set about chasing one of the only women who doesn’t seem interested in him: star-student and hotshot student journalist Gwen Pearson.

Challenge… finding a way to stay at Coolidge. After seven years of skipped classes, missed exams, and casual day drinking, Van’s father is finally cutting his son off and refusing to pay his tuition. The relaxed Van finds himself in a bit of a tough situation; he needs to find a way to stay at Coolidge as well as impress the successful and hardworking Gwen.

Personality… fun-loving, cool, and extremely wise. In his own laid-back way, at least. Van is the most popular guy on campus for a reason: he’s always there to help out a friend in need and pass on some of his pearls of wisdom. “Worrying is like a rocking chair,” he says, “it gives you something to do, but it doesn’t get you anywhere.”
