Character Analysis

(Avoiding Spoilers)

Grew Up… a child of divorce with a deadbeat dad. Ever since, he’s felt pretty alone in the world.

Visiting… Lelaina’s and Vickie’s apartment, where he’s crashing on their couch until he can find a job and an apartment of his own. Though he hasn’t been looking too hard.

Profession… cashier at a local newsstand. Or at least, that was his job until he was fired for on-the-job product consumption. In his defense, it’s hard to be around Snickers for that long without sampling a few.  He’s also in a band, but they don’t seem to be playing many gigs outside of the local dive bar.

Interests… philosophy, his guitar, Camel Straights cigarettes, and a good cup of coffee. Troy doesn’t need a lot in his life – he’s perfectly content to sit around, strumming his guitar, and thinking about life. As he says, “I take pleasure in the details. You know... a Quarter-Pounder with cheese, those are good, the sky about ten minutes before it starts to rain, the moment where your laughter become a cackle.”

Relationship Status… secretly in love with his good friend, Lelaina. Instead of really doing something about it, he has a series of meaningless flings, which make Lelaina think he isn’t interested in a real relationship.

Challenge… getting over himself. Troy thinks he knows better than everyone else, and it takes awhile for him to let his guard down enough to realize that there are opinions other than his own. It’s a defense mechanism – if he’s better than everyone else, then he doesn’t need them, so who cares if they stick around? Troy acts like he’s got it all figured out, but that’s mostly because he doesn’t have enough self-worth to acknowledge that he needs to figure out anything besides whose couch he’s going to crash on.

Personality… cynical, defensive, and a loner. Sure, Troy technically has friends – some pretty good ones too. But he’s spent his life defining himself as an outcast, someone who doesn’t need anyone or anything but himself and his thoughts. Troy doesn’t trust that anything he loves will love him back, let alone stick around.
