Character Analysis

(Avoiding Spoilers)

Living… in Miramar, California. Tom Kazensky, who is known as “Iceman,” just joined the Top Gun program, which was established in 1969 for the top one percent of Navy pilots. Its purpose is to teach the lost art of aerial combat and ensure that the handful of men who graduate from the program are the best fighter pilots in the world. Over six weeks, they will have two combat missions a day and ten classes in between. There are no points for coming in second place.

Profession… naval aviator. Tom got his nickname of Iceman because he’s ice cold and doesn’t make any mistakes. He follows orders religiously and believes Top Gun rules are for the safety of their teams. Tom is lucky to have Slider as a wingman who thinks as he does.

Interests… winning at everything, including beach volleyball.

Relationship Status... married to Sarah. They are committed to each other.

Challenge… winning the Top Gun trophy. Tom is the favorite to win the coveted prize among 20 of the most talented pilots, but another pilot named Maverick is on his heels. Tom considers Maverick a reckless cowboy who is risking the lives of the other pilots in their program. As Tom says to him, "Maverick, it's not your flying, it's your attitude. The enemy's dangerous, but right now you're worse. Dangerous and foolish. You may not like who's flying with you, but whose side are you on?"

Personality… cocky, determined, and rigid. Iceman is one of the most dedicated people, and he never gives up on anything. He precisely calculates his risks and carefully follows the Navy’s guidelines for best practices. But Tom is missing what Maverick has in spades: guts and instinct.
