Character Analysis

(Avoiding Spoilers)

Living... hostage and ward of Lord Eddard Stark. He’s a hostage in the sense that he cannot leave, but as a ward he is treated well. He has become extremely close with Stark’s son Robb and more or less becomes part of the family.

Profession... Greyjoy became a ward of the Stark’s after his father Balon Greyjoy’s failed attempt to rebel against King Robert Baratheon. Now he is educated and trained alongside the Stark children, excelling at archery.

Interests… fitting in with the Stark family and becoming a master archer and battle strategist. He learns from one of the best in Eddard Stark, even though he is derisively called Stark’s “lackey” for doing so.

Relationship Status... a regular customer of Ros, a prostitute in Winterfell. When she goes to King’s Landing, he comes across a girl he tries to seduce, but little does he know it’s secretly his long-lost sister.

Challenge... dealing with the massive chip on his shoulder. Theon is constantly reminded that he is not truly a Stark, while he has been gone from his own family so long that they don’t view him as one of them either. It’s hard enough when Tyrion Lannister calls him a hostage, but it really hurts when his supposed best friend Robb reminds him they are not truly brothers. If the Seven Kingdoms fall prey to war (O.K., “When”), will Theon stay loyal to the Starks, or fall in line with his father Balon Greyjoy, ruler of the Iron Islands and a man who usually has plans of his own?

Personality... brave and cocky but still aware of the dangers of battle. He tells Robb it’s good that he’s afraid before his first battle. Why? In Theon’s words, “It means you’re not stupid.” Yet, behind all that is someone who simply wants to be loved. He may have found a surrogate family in the Starks but still, he feels like an outsider.
