Jerrod Carmichael

Grew Up... in Charlotte, North Carolina with his parents and his older brother Bobby. The Carmichael household was full of love and support, but also its fair share of vocal disagreements.   

Living... in an apartment not too far from from his parents’ house. Jerrod is eager for independence, but not so eager that he won’t stop by for a home cooked meal a few nights a week.  

Profession... Jerrod’s generally too busy arguing about social and political issues to reveal what he actually does for a living. But he gets by okay, especially when his girlfriend’s rich father chips in for their rent.  

Interests... singing Taylor Swift, celebrating his birthday, and wearing his camo snuggie. But Jerrod’s number one passion in life is shoes; he spends a good chunk of his paycheck on the latest in high-end sneakers.  

Relationship Status... seriously dating his psychology-student girlfriend Maxine. In fact, the two just moved in together. Though they frequently have very different opinions about the world, Maxine and Jerrod love each other enough to work through them together.  

Challenge... figuring out his place in a complicated world. Jerrod regularly grapples with all sorts of contemporary issues—from the Black Lives Matter movement to gun control to Islamophobia to gentrification. He works through those tricky topics with the help of his liberal girlfriend, his conservative parents, his eccentric brother, and his brother’s even more eccentric ex-wife. The passionate Carmichaels love to argue, but at the end of the day they always have each other’s backs.  

Personality... laid-back, funny, and a little immature. Because he comes from such an argumentative family, Jerrod prefers to avoid a fight whenever possible. Humor is his number one defense mechanism, and he’s quick to make a joke whenever he feels uncomfortable. He once told Maxine, “You will not tell my parents we're living together tonight, and if you do, I will deflect, I will distract, and you won't be able to get a word in.” But deep down Jerrod is also thoughtful and intelligent. Ultimately, he wants to do the right thing, he just sometimes needs a little push in the right direction.
