The Baker's Wife

Living... somewhat discontentedly, above a bakery in a small corner of a fairy tale kingdom.

Visiting... the woods. Where she finds things are a bit less orderly than she’s used to.

Profession... supportive wife, which in this case is a fulltime job. As the “better half” of the Baker, she essentially co-runs his bakery. Given that he can be a bit absent-minded, that’s no easy feat.  

Interests... adorable children, handsome Princes, and daydreams. Her life isn’t exactly a fairy tale, so The Baker’s Wife will occasionally daydream about a better one. Sometimes she fantasizes about having a baby with her husband, and other times she imagines being swept off her feet by a suave Prince. But she also recognizes she can’t live in a dream: “When you know you can't have what you want, where’s the profit in wishing?”

Relationship Status... married to the Baker. Although they care for each other deeply, theirs isn’t exactly a happily-ever-after romance – especially because he has a bad habit of underestimating her.

Challenge... breaking a curse and having a baby. As the Baker’s Wife learns, a neighboring Witch cursed her husband’s family with infertility. In order to finally get the baby they long for, the Baker and the Baker’s Wife will have to collect “the cow as white as milk, the cape as red as blood, the hair as yellow as corn, the slipper as pure as gold.” Of course, it’s also important to be careful what one wishes for…

Personality... practical, patient, determined. Unlike her often-bumbling husband, the Baker’s Wife is no-nonsense and resolutely practical. She’s the one who remembers the details he forgets and picks up the slack he drops. Though she’d love to be a fairy tale princess, she knows she’s destined for a less glamorous life and is doubly determined to make it a happy one. She explains, “If you know what you want, then you go and you find it, and you get it.”
