Character Analysis
(Avoiding Spoilers)
Grew Up... in Minas Tirith, the capital of Gondor. Talion’s family descends from the Northmen of Rhovanion.
Living... in Mordor. Talion was stationed at the Black Gate separating the rest of Middle-Earth from Mordor, the Dark Lord Sauron’s domain. However, to take down the Uruk hordes, he must enter Mordor itself.
Profession... Ranger of Gondor. Talion was an elite military captain tasked with protecting his kingdom from Sauron’s evil Uruk forces.
Interests... surviving. As a ranger, Talion has honed many survival skills like stealth, archery, and swordplay. He can also force Uruks to fight on his behalf instead of putting himself in danger.
Relationship Status... widower. Talion and his loving family, wife Ioreth and son Dirhael, were kidnapped from their outpost and ritually sacrificed by three of Sauron’s Black Númenórean captains – the Hammer, the Tower, and the Black Hand – along with their Uruk armies.
Challenge... getting his revenge. Although he was killed with the rest of his family, Talion was then resurrected as his captors attempted to revive the Elf Lord Celebrimbor. The process resurrected Talion as well and fused him with the wraith, granting him new abilities. Although he is wary of his new partner, Talion accepts Celebrimbor’s help and sets out to claim vengeance for the murder of his family. In so doing they repeatedly encounter an odd creature named Gollum who may well have motives of his own.
Personality... serious and world-weary. Talion carries many burdens – not just the burden of the mysterious extra soul inside of him, but the more existential burden of being trapped, only half-alive, while his family waits for him in the afterlife. As he says, “I had a family once, and I buried them along with everyone I ever knew.”
