Character Analysis

(Avoiding Spoilers)

Grew up… as William the Bloody, an unsuccessful poet known for his “bloody awful” poetry. In 19th century London he even admitted, “I know I’m a bad poet.” Only after becoming a vampire did he actually live up to his moniker. William later acquired the nickname “Spike” after torturing his victims with railroad spikes while on a rampage throughout Europe with fellow vampires, Drusilla and Angelus.

Visiting... Sunnydale, California. The quaint little town became a refuge for Spike and Drusilla after Drusilla was viciously attacked by an angry mob in Prague. Sunnydale has a high concentration of demons because it was built on the site of a Hellmouth, a direct passage from hell to Earth. Its dark energy provides healing properties from vampires and other evil creatures.

Profession... vampire and Slayer-killer. Spike has killed two Slayers in the past, and wants to make Buffy Summers his third victim. Although Spike has an attraction to violence, he doesn’t want to end the world like other vampires do. As he says, “The truth is, I like this world. You've got dog racing, Manchester United, and you've got people... billions of people walking around like Happy Meals with legs. It's all right here.”

Interests... punk music, notably the Sex Pistols and the Ramones.

Relationship Status… in complicated relationship with Drusilla. He was devastated when Drusilla cheated on him with Angelus. Nevertheless, he still praises her as “the face of his salvation.”

Challenge… overcoming his hotheadedness and self-loathing. Spike has a wide streak of human emotion.

Personality... unpredictable, chaotic, but still with a sense of poetry. His failures during his human life have caused him to lash out at society as a vampire. Spike rejects the conventions of society and seeks pleasure in chaos and destruction. There is another side to him, however. He is also a romantic, and keenly observant of other people’s thoughts and feelings.
