Character Analysis

(Avoiding Spoilers)

Grew up… on Mars. Born in 2044,  Spike lived on the red planet before becoming a member of the Red Dragon Crime Syndicate.

Living… on his spaceship, the Bebop, drifting throughout the universe. Spike might enjoy his solitude, but he's glad to have partner Jet Black along, both for Jet's sharpshooting skills and his company. However, when the Bebop starts adding more members to their crew, Spike gets a little irritated, especially when all the new members happen to be the three things he hates most: “kids, animals, and women with attitudes.”

Profession… bounty hunter. Criminals abound in the year 2068, and in order to keep crime down, many governments have reinstated the bounty system of the Wild West. Spike is one of the many space cowboys around, and while he's good at catching crooks, the Bebop is constantly struggling to make ends meet. But at least it’s safer than being a member of the Syndicate, albeit not by much.

Interests… sleeping, smoking, and gambling. Spike likes to lead a relaxed life and hates anything that requires him to put in any effort (especially if there’s no payout). When he’s not on his ship, Spike spends most of his time brooding in the rain, a cigarette between his lips as he contemplates... well, something. He’s also quite good at using sleight-of-hand to earn a quick Woolong (their currency), though his cheating often gets Spike into trouble.

Relationship Status… single. Spike was once involved with a mysterious woman named Julia, but he doesn't like to talk much about it – too many bad memories. What's in the past is in the past. Despite this, Spike is quite the ladies’ man, and appreciates tough women: “I love the kind of woman that can kick my ass.” Mouthy troublemakers like Faye Valentine, however, are decidedly a no-go.

Challenge… collecting his bounties and avoiding the Syndicate. When Spike left the Syndicate, he betrayed his partner, Vicious, and had to fake his own death to avoid being hunted down. As a result, Spike's been running from his past ever since. He has enough trouble paying for his meals without having to worry about his former associates gunning him down.

Personality… lackadaisical, cool, and confident. Surprisingly philosophical, Spike views life as nothing but a dream, and he likes to just take things as they come rather than worrying about what could happen. His cocky behavior makes him appear careless and stand-offish at times, but he’s got a good head on his shoulders and an even better aim.
