Character Analysis

(Avoiding Spoilers)

Grew up… in Nigeria, but that was a long time ago. Adebisi’s accent is still noticeable, but after 15 years in the United States he’s managed to internalize American culture and values, for better and worse. Today, he no longer belongs to Africa. Instead, he belongs to the U.S. penal system.

Living… in Oswald State Penitentiary for life, without the possibility of parole. Adebisi was convicted of decapitating an undercover police officer, which earned him a life sentence and a reputation as one of Oz’s most dangerous prisoners.

Profession… up and coming in Oz’s “black” gang, the Homeboys. Simon began his prison tenure as a low-level solider in the gang, but is slowly plotting his way up the ranks. Simon wants whatever is good for business, even if it means working with former enemies.

Interests… heroin. It's one of his many bad habits.

Relationship Status... single. Prison is not a great place to meet women. Simon does develop a crush on death-row inmate and convicted child-killer Shirley Bellinger, even exchanging steamy letters, but that doesn’t seem destined for success.

Challenge… running Oz’s drug trade. Adebisi shows ambition when it comes to business dealings, and he’s willing to strong-arm or kill anyone who gets in his way, despite the threat of retribution or even death. Adebisi, as a “lifer,” has nothing to lose.

Personality… tough and quick to anger. Adebisi eventually proves his ability to plan for the long term. He’s realistic about life in Oz, and doesn’t rely on gang or race loyalties to guide his actions. He knows that even his own men are capable of turning on him. In his words, “We are, all of us, bad men. That’s what we have in common.”
