Character Analysis

(Avoiding Spoilers)

Grew up… in China with his family. Up until the age of 14, Shang-Chi lived prosperously with his family, the Wenwus. His father, Xu, is the leader of the Ten Ring Army and amassed a great fortune over the years as he used the rings to conquer many kingdoms and governments. Shang-Chi lived with his mother, Ying, and his sister, Xu; the family lived in harmony as Xu decided to give up the Ten Rings and focus on raising his family. But when Shang-Chi was seven, his mother passed, leading his father to resume leadership of the Ten Rings and to train Shang-Chi to become a skilled assassin. Shang-Chi was a dedicated student when he was training with his father; he wanted to have his father’s validation so badly that he would even physically harm himself in order to push his limits. But everything took a toll on him, and he fled to America.

Living… in San Francisco, going by the name of Shaun. He lives a seemingly “normal” life, enjoying his two favorite pastimes: drinking and karaoke.

Profession… valet driver. Shang-Chi left all his wealth in China when he ran away to San Francisco. To support himself, he is a valet driver. He works alongside his good friend Katy.

Relationship Status… single. Shang-Chi has known Katy for many years, but they’ve never been more than friends, much to the disbelief of the people around them. The two have great chemistry, so who knows what the future holds.

Challenge… dealing with what made him leave China in the first place. On a bus with Katy in San Francisco, Shang-Chi fought for his life with impressive karate skills against some thugs who stole the pendant that he was wearing (given to him by his mom). With Katy, he travels to Macau, China, to warn his sister about the men who attacked him because they are also coming after her. As more secrets from his family are revealed, Shang-Chi realizes he can only have peace in the future if he confronts his painful past.

Personality… dedicated, quirky, fierce, loving, and brave. Shang-Chi was a serious young man in China, but he has loosened up in America, often showing a goofy side of his personality. When it is time to protect the people he cares about, he doesn’t back down from anyone and fights fiercely, utilizing all the skills he learned when he was young. Even though he has the potential to kill anyone, Shang-Chi is more of a lover than a fighter.
