Character Analysis
(Avoiding Spoilers)
Living... at Castle Black, where Sam is training to become a member of the Night’s Watch and guard the Wall. An overweight, bookish boy, Sam never wanted to be sent to the Wall. His position with the Night’s Watch was forced upon him by his father, who was so ashamed of Sam that he told him that his two choices were to join the Night’s Watch or to suffer a hunting “accident.” That didn’t exactly help Sam’s self-esteem any.
Profession... aspiring member of the Night’s Watch. The Night’s Watch are an ancient brotherhood of men who forsake all women, land, and titles and dedicate themselves to guarding a giant ice structure known as the Wall. North of the Wall is a white wasteland populated by vicious wildlings and other unnamed horrors. The Night’s Watch is all that stands between them and the Seven Kingdoms.
Interests… reading. Sam sees himself as a fat coward and he’s failed at most everything he’s ever attempted, only finding solace and escape through books. While Sam isn’t a gifted warrior or strategist, he is a budding scholar and devours texts as readily as he devours food.
Relationship Status... none at the moment. Samwell is still a virgin and takes a lot of heat for it. It’s a constant source of embarrassment. Plus, the Night’s Watch oath states, “I shall take no wife,” so his romantic future is rather bleak. But in a world at war, who knows what turns his path may take.
Challenge... fitting in with the Night’s Watch. Samwell feels like an outsider at the Wall – he’s an overweight virgin who is terrible at combat. He’d much rather spend his time reading, but he had no choice in the matter. Luckily he befriends his fellow Night’s Watch newcomer Jon Snow, who protects him. Now, if Sam is forced to march north of the Wall to confront the dangers lurking out there, all bets are off.
Personality... bright and well-educated, but a lousy soldier. Still, Sam is a great and loyal friend to Jon Snow and is extremely intelligent. Not everyone on the Night’s Watch can be a master swordsman, so hopefully he can use his brains to get ahead in this harsh, wintry environment.
