Character Analysis

(Avoiding Spoilers)

Living… on the run in a 1950s T-Bird convertible. Sailor and his lover Lula left Pee Dee County once Sailor got out of prison, and now they’re on their way to California. Sailor’s heard it doesn’t rain much there. They’ve got about six more big states to go before they find out.

Profession… former prisoner. Sailor was imprisoned for killing a man who was hired by Lula's mother to murder him. He served his time and was released, but his parole prohibits him from leaving Portagee County. He suspects Lula's mother has ratted him out for violating his parole.

Interests… singing Elvis Presley songs and wearing his snakeskin jacket (his "personal symbol of individuality").

Relationship Status… committed to Lula, the only thing he’s got left. And soon there will be three of them. He’s glad Lula's keeping the baby. She's going to name it Pace no matter if it's a boy or a girl.

Challenge… making away with as much loot as possible. Their double-barreled, sawed-off, Ithaca shotgun wrapped with adhesive tape along with a cold Smith and Wesson .32 handgun with a six inch barrel usually does the trick. Sailor knows it’s their only option: “That kind'a money's gonna get us a long way down that yellow brick road...”

Personality… wild at heart. As Sailor says, “I'm a robber and a manslaughterer and I haven't had any parental guidance.” Sailor follows the wisdom of the Glinda the Good Witch from The Wizard of Oz, who says that those who are truly wild at heart don’t turn away from love. They fight for their dreams. The trip is the only way to put his money where his mouth is.
