Character Analysis

(Avoiding Spoilers)

Living... in Lake Zurich, Illinois. It’s just Ryan alone ever since her daughter died.

Visiting... space. In fact, she’s stuck there. Ryan was working on the space shuttle Explorer until debris from a missile strike caused a chain reaction, hitting other satellites and creating new hurtling space junk. The impact has created a cloud of deadly debris orbiting Earth at twenty thousand miles per hour. Once the Explorer was destroyed, she was left floating, lost in space, with no communication with Mission Control.

Profession... medical engineer on her first space mission. Up in space, she spends most of her time on the communication card panel on the Hubble. Installing her system in the Hubble is the very purpose of this mission. She warned Engineering that something like this could happen. They should've listened to her.

Interests... space, any kind of escape. She's put all her time into her job since she lost her daughter. That put an end to hobbies. Now all she likes to do is drive with the radio on. No real destination, just driving and listening. Killing time.

Relationship Status... single. She’s still reeling from her last relationship. It fell apart after her daughter died. She was four. She was at school playing tag. Slipped, hit her head, and that was it. Matt, her partner on the mission, flirts with Ryan -- even under these tense circumstances. Maybe he means it, maybe it’s just to relax her. It's not really something she can think about right now.

Challenge... survival. If the worst happens, she's scared no one will pray for her soul. She's scared it's too late; she’s already alone. But either she makes it back to Earth in one piece and she has one hell of a story to tell, or she burns into the ether. Either way, it'll be one hell of a ride.

Personality... damaged and introverted. That's why she likes it in space. You can shut down all the systems, turn out all the lights... and just close your eyes and tune out everybody. There’s nobody up here that can hurt you. Matt tells her she needs to plant both her feet on the ground and start living life again, and he’s probably right. But first she has to stay alive, period.
