Ryan Atwood

Grew up… in the rough city of Chino, Calif. Ryan had to grow up a lot quicker than most kids his age. As a young teenager, Ryan has already been through a lot: physically abused by his father, ignored by his alcoholic mother and left with the responsibility of supporting himself.

Living… in the pool house of the Cohen family in Newport Beach, Calif. Ryan has been staying with his public defender’s family ever since he was kicked out of his mother’s home. While Ryan now resides in the affluent neighborhood of Newport and is treated as a full-fledged member of the Cohen family, he’ll never stop looking over his shoulder. He’ll always have a bit of Chino in him.

Profession… former part-time criminal. Ryan’s new “job” is to study hard in high school and get the grades that he’s capable of. His life with the Cohens frees him from the tough financial constraints he faced in Chino, allowing him to live up to his potential. He also has a new best friend and classmate in his “brother” Seth Cohen, a smart, funny but geeky teen who could stand to be toughened up by Ryan.

Relationship Status… single. Ryan is, and will always be, a heartthrob. No matter where he is, girls flock to him. His mysterious and tough persona make him the most desired boy at The Harbor School. He’s certainly caught the eye of Marissa Cooper. Too bad she has a boyfriend who already hates Ryan’s guts.

Challenge… assimilating into Newport life. There are new rules for him to learn. He came of age in a rough place, and it’ll be difficult to un-learn the lessons that he grew up to believe. As he once said, “Where I’m from, having a dream doesn’t make you smart. Knowing it won’t come true? That does.”

Personality… hardheaded, compassionate, and strong. Ryan’s worldview straddles the line between realistic and cynical. He’s a man of few words who likes to save talking “for when it counts.” Despite his cynical and masculine persona, Ryan is possessed by a drive to rescue anyone in need – including himself.
