Grew Up... in Gloucester, Massachusetts. Ruby is New England born and raised.
Living... with her deaf family. They live in an ordinary home and own a boat that is used for fishing.
Profession... assistant in her family's fishing business. Ruby is a senior in high school, which occupies much of her time. The rest is spent helping her family. Since Ruby can hear, unlike her deaf parents and brother, she has an important role in translating between spoken English and sign language. It seems that their fishing business cannot survive without her.
Interests... singing. After Ruby joins her school's choir, the discovery is made that she has a beautiful voice. Ruby has started taking vocal lessons with Mr. V, adding a new commitment to her already crowded schedule. Ruby aspires to become a singer, and Berklee College in Boston is where her sights are set.
Relationship Status... single. Ruby is interested in Miles, who attends the same high school. In fact, her decision to join the choir was motivated by Miles' having done so. It seems like the stars begin to align when the two are paired for a duet by Mr. V.
Challenge... choosing between her passion and her family. As Ruby says, "I really love to sing." When the vocal lessons start piling up, she is forced to decide what is more important for her time: pursuing Berklee or staying in Gloucester to help her family. Things are getting harder in the fishing business, and Ruby's help is needed more than ever. Meanwhile, Mr. V grows to question Ruby's devotion when she is late to her lessons.
Personality... kind, dedicated, and reserved. Ruby is a loyal daughter and often sacrifices her own needs and desires for her family that needs her. She’s trying her best to find the right balance between following her own passions and taking care of the ones she loves.
