Character Analysis

(Avoiding Spoilers)

Grew up… completely normal. Roy’s life, prior to his “close encounter,” was picture-perfect. He, his wife and their three children were living ordinary, happy lives in Indiana, until he encountered an unidentified flying object (UFO) late one night.

Living… with a new obsession. Roy can’t seem to get a mysterious image of a mountain out his head. As he puts it, “I know this sounds crazy, but ever since yesterday on the road, I’ve been seeing this shape. This means something, this is important.”

Profession… electrical lineman for a utility company, though Roy isn’t spending much time at work these days. Instead he’s occupying his days reconstructing the mountainous image that’s been stuck in his mind’s eye.

Interests… solving the mystery of the UFO. Roy knows that something big is going on across America, he just doesn’t know what. But he’s determined to find out. Roy quickly discovers that he’s not alone; that another local woman, Jillian, has had a similar encounter.

Relationship Status… on the rocks. His marriage to his wife Ronnie is deteriorating due to his all-consuming obsession with UFOs.

Challenge… learning the truth. Roy is starting to suspect that the U.S. Government is involved in some sort of cover-up. He yells at a government official: “I got a couple of thousand goddamn questions, you know. I want to speak to someone in charge. I want to lodge a complaint. You have no right to make people crazy!”

Personality… obsessive. Roy knows that his behavior is not normal, but he can’t seem to stop himself from investigating this cosmic mystery. The best he can tell his crying children is, “Well, I guess you’ve noticed something a little strange with dad. But it’s okay, I’m still dad.” But Roy has come too far to turn back now.
