Character Analysis

(Avoiding Spoilers)

Living… in the Upper West Side of Manhattan in an empty nest with her husband Abe. Their two children Midge and Noah have grown up and moved out.

Profession… housewife. Rose wouldn’t want to have any other profession. She doesn’t feel the need to be equal to men or stand up for herself. She has gone most of her life with others making decisions for her, and she loves that. Or at least she thought she did.

Interests… beauty, matchmaking, and fortune tellers. Rose maintains her figure and appearance meticulously and places great importance on her family’s standing with the rest of the affluent Jewish social world in New York. Matchmaking, especially the social connections and gossip that come with it, is a way for Rose to stay in the loop with the upper-class housewife circle of New York. She is also superstitious and regularly visits a Romanian fortune teller for advice in times of need.

Relationship Status… married to Abe, who is a professor at Columbia. To the outside world, they have the perfect marriage. But their marriage is more complicated than it may appear.

Challenge… accepting that her daughter Midge has decided on an unconventional life path after separating from her husband Joel. Rose, who has always done things the conventional way, is shocked to see Midge refuse to get back together with Joel, and instead pursue a career in stand-up comedy.

Personality… elegant, poised, and meddling. Rose Weissman is always seen in a Chanel suit with a matching hat, hair perfectly curled, and makeup done. She believes things must be done properly, which for women means always being perfect and polite. She passes down these values to Midge because she believes this will allow her daughter to have a good life. But as Rose’s perfect family life begins to fall apart, she will have to question the values she’s built her life on.
