Character Analysis

(Avoiding Spoilers)

Grew Up... in a lower-class broken home where his father was arrested for dealing drugs. His group of friends – Charlie, Dennis, Dee, and Frank, collectively known as "The Gang" – never fails to make fun of him for his impoverished origins.

Living... in a small apartment in Philadelphia that he splits with Dennis, but Mac doesn't really own any of the furnishings – or anything, really. All of the furniture, decorations, and even some of the clothes Mac wears belong to Dennis.

Profession... co-owner of Paddy's Pub. Like the rest of The Gang, Mac helps run the failing business. He believes himself to be the "Sherriff of Paddy's,” but in reality mostly just drinks in the ever-empty bar with his friends.

Interests... physicality. Mac is extremely proud of his self-proclaimed physical skills. He often brags about his expert ability in combat and usually wears cut-off sleeveless shirts to show off his muscular arms. But while he’ll occasionally demonstrate these “talents” in ridiculous and dangerous stunts to impress The Gang, he typically backs down in any actual confrontations.

Relationship Status... single, but living with the promiscuous Dennis puts him in a good place for meeting women. He has been involved in a few short term "flings", including one with Dennis and Dee's mother, which he will likely keep to himself for a while.

Challenge... gaining respect. Above anything else, Mac cares about proving himself valuable to the rest of The Gang so they’ll respect him. However, his lack of foresight makes this pretty difficult to accomplish. Virtually every plan he concocts is absurd, such as when he tries to convince Charlie that incarceration is a means to success: "This is our opportunity to prove to people that we are to be respected. No one is more respected than dudes in prison, right?"

Personality... a pleaser, but also extremely competitive and aggressively demeaning. He is constantly belittling Dee for little to no reason and feels great jealousy at the success of anyone else. Overall, he’s not a terrible friend; he just has very base desires. As he puts it, "It's all about rocking and looking good and kicking ass."
