Character Analysis

(Avoiding Spoilers)

Living… content in New York City until he and several others are rounded up by the New York City police as suspects in a gun shipment robbery. While in holding, one of the prisoners, McManus, suggests that they get back at the authorities by intercepting a smuggler and stealing his loot. Their heist is successful and the former cellmates decide to work together as a criminal enterprise.

Profession… a small-time con artist in big-time trouble. Roger “Verbal” Kint’s schemes have gotten him roped in with a dangerous crowd. When he and his colleagues – McManus, Fenster, Hockney, and Keaton – get hired for a job by brutal underworld criminal, Keyser Soze, the group finds itself in serious peril. If they botch the operation, they won’t live to see another day.

Interests… staying alive. At this point, all Kint wants is to survive the heist. Soze has ordered him and his colleagues to destroy $91 million worth of cocaine being sold to a Hungarian gang. If they fail, their friends and families will be killed.

Relationship Status… single, which is a very good thing if you’re involved with Soze. Keaton’s girlfriend, Edie Finneran, will be murdered if the group does not succeed.

Challenge… surviving Keyser Soze. The crime boss’ cruelty and mercilessness is legendary. When his family was held hostage by the Hungarian gang, Soze killed his wife and kids himself, just to demonstrate his resolve. Verbal has good reason to be terrified: Keaton always said, ‘I don’t believe in God, but I’m afraid of him.’ Well, I believe in God, and the only thing that scares me is Keyser Soze.” In the short term, Verbal is also trying to talk his way out of trouble with a customs agent named Dave Kujan.

Personality… nervous and weak, but very clever. Verbal Kint seems too meek to be useful in a con. His anxious nature and mild cerebral palsy (at least, that’s what he appears to have) tend to be setbacks during heists. However, Verbal is invaluable as an ideas man – he comes up with most of the details behind the group’s schemes. In fact, it’s possible that everyone simply underestimates Verbal because of his appearance and demeanor.
