Character Analysis

(Avoiding Spoilers)

Grew Up… when Earth was still a good place to be a child. Times have changed since Deckard was a young boy. The Earth’s climate has been altered due to alarming levels of pollution, turning Deckard’s home city of Los Angeles into a bleak, overbuilt, and overpopulated urban jungle.

Living… in dystopian Los Angeles, in the year 2019. It's not a pretty city to live in, and Deckard works hard to keep his work-related trauma under control.

Profession… Blade Runner. Deckard is a special bounty hunter working for the Los Angeles Police Department. His targets are artificially intelligent humanoid cyborgs called “Replicants.” In 2019, Replicants (or, the more derogatory term, “skinjobs”) have been banned from use on Earth. As Deckard explains, “Replicants are like any other machine. They’re either a benefit or a hazard. If they’re a benefit, it’s not my problem.”

Relationship Status… divorced. Deckard says, “sushi—that’s what my ex-wife called me. Cold fish.” The lonesome Deckard doesn’t have many romantic thoughts, until he encounters Rachael, a beautiful, loving woman. Problem? Rachael's a Replicant – a highly experimental, ultra-realistic model, yes, but a Replicant nonetheless.

Challenge… finding and “retiring” four renegade Replicants. Deckard was called in to kill a highly dangerous and intelligent group of skinjobs who have come to Earth from an off-world colony. In the process, Deckard has to come to terms with what it means to live, die, and be human.

Personality… self-centered, strong, and cynical. Deckard is a jaded, silent man, who struggles with the moral ambiguities of being a “killer," despite the inhuman nature of the Replicants he kills.
