Character Analysis

(Avoiding Spoilers)

Overview… a beleaguered shoe salesman who is looking for meaning after failing in marriage. Richard and his wife have separated prior to their immanent divorce. He isn’t only upset at having to leave behind the woman that he once loved, but he feels as if he’s failed on a larger level. “Objectively speaking,” he asks his kids, “if you weren’t my children, would you think that guy looks okay? He looks like a guy who might have a wife and kids and stuff?” Thankfully, one woman he met recently seems to appreciate him– Christine Jeperson, an aspiring video artist.

Personality… sad, lonely, and underwhelmed with life. Richard isn’t satisfied with the life he leads. He wants his children to look up to him and ask him advice, yet he seems clueless on how to how to live or how to make a real human connection in a vast and dreary city.
