Character Analysis

(Avoiding Spoilers)

Living... a secretive life by herself in New Jersey. Hadley only discloses personal details of her life to those she is closest to – and sometimes not even them – so the people she sees at work on a daily basis know very little about her.

Profession... doctor. She’s a member of a special diagnostics team put together by Dr. Gregory House at the Princeton-Plainsboro Teaching Hospital. To highlight her enigmatic persona, Hadley’s colleagues refer to her solely by the name "Thirteen," in reference to the number she was assigned in the competition for her position at the hospital.

Interests... sex, drugs, and alcohol, much of it surreptitious. Thirteen starts falling into various addictions, spurred in part because of a personal secret.

Relationship Status... single again. Thirteen started dating Dr. Foreman, another member of the hospital staff, fairly soon after starting work at Princeton-Plainsboro. Their relationship goes well for a while, but they have trouble balancing their careers and romance – especially when he becomes her superior. Outside of Foreman, Thirteen is also known for engaging in recreational sex with both men and women. Well, “known” might be a stretch since she tries to keep that part of her life under wraps, but Thirteen definitely enjoys the physical company of both sexes.

Challenge... managing her medical condition. Thirteen's mother died of Huntington's disease, a genetically inheritable illness, years prior to her work at the hospital. Thirteen had long resisted being tested for the disease, arguing that "not knowing allows me to live with hope" – though it also likely inspired her more careless behaviors. But after being pushed by House, she takes the test and is discovered to carry the affected gene. Although not experiencing any symptoms yet, she is forced to deal with the realities of her potentially fatal diagnosis, which becomes a source of great stress in her life.

Personality... smart, secretive, jaded, and reckless. Thirteen likes to hold her cards very close, not even succumbing to the persistent prodding of her superior, House, when he presses her about personal information. She enjoys remaining enigmatic and is thus seen (generally correctly) as independent and strong, garnering the respect of both House and her other colleagues. As Dr. Wilson tells her, "You're the only one he's never really been able to suck into his crazy House vortex." Thirteen can sometimes be reckless with sex and drugs, but is generally a compassionate person and a very good doctor.
