Character Analysis

(Avoiding Spoilers)

Living… in the Shinigami Realm, but she’s been spending a lot of time in the Human World lately. After seeing a fellow god of death die saving Misa Amane by writing the name of her attacker in his Death Note (a notebook that grants the power to kill), she figures it’s right to pass the Death Note on to Misa.

Profession… Shinigami, or God of death. Rem’s only job is to kill humans by writing their names in her Death Note to extend her own lifespan. After she gives the dead Shinigami’s Death Note to Misa, Rem must accompany her until she dies or willingly returns the notebook.

Interests… helping Misa. Although Rem has little interest in humanity as a whole, she quickly grows fond of Misa.

Relationship Status… single. Although Shinigami can have feelings for each other and humans, they are generally incapable of having relationships.

Challenge… protecting Misa, which is not easy. Despite Rem’s advice, Misa recklessly seeks out Kira and puts her affection for him above her own well-being. After Misa releases statements to the press in hopes of getting Kira’s attention, the police realize there are two killers, and Misa’s safety is further jeopardized.

Personality… withdrawn and serious. Rem is a far cry from Misa’s upbeat, intense, and bubbly disposition. Rem cares only for Misa, who she would kill for and die for. Rem trusts no one but herself (and perhaps Misa). She tells Kira: “If you do anything that results in this girl’s death, the first thing I’ll do is write your name in my Death Note. I will kill you.”
