Character Analysis

(Avoiding Spoilers)

Grew Up... under mysterious circumstances. Flipping through Rei's files, scientist Ritsuko Akagi notes that, "Her past has been eradicated. All of her personal records have been erased." Whatever the circumstances of her childhood, Rei grew up with a strong sense of loyalty to Gendo Ikari, the estranged father of her co-pilot Shinji and perhaps the only man capable of coaxing a smile out of the quiet girl.

Living... alone in Tokyo-3. She lives in an apartment resembling a barrack more than the room of a 14-year-old girl.

Profession... pilot of the Evangelion, a giant robot created to fight invading aliens called Angels. While her co-pilots Shinji and Asuka express terror and glee, respectively, at piloting the Evangelion, Rei has a stoic, resigned approach to her job. As Rei quietly states before a mission, "Even if I die, I can be replaced."

Interests... who knows? With a face as blank as her room, Rei barely seems to have human emotions, much less any interests. Still, her loyalty to Gendo means Rei is uncharacteristically protective of her father-figure, slapping Shinji when he questions Gendo and asking, "Don’t you have faith in your own father’s work?"

Relationship Status... single, but with seemingly no nudity taboo. She will drop her clothes around people without giving it a second thought, though apparently innocently. Given the nature of her interactions with others, frankly, it's unsure whether Rei knows friendship is, much less romance.

Challenge... piloting the Evangelion while exploring her own mysterious past. While a competent pilot, Rei faces more trouble in uncovering her origins. No one, it seems, has any knowledge of who Rei is, least of all Rei herself. In fact, it’s a fair question whether she’s even truly human.

Personality... silent, stoic, and clearly never properly socialized. While her classmates express alternating lust towards and curiosity about her, Rei herself seems to have no opinion on them – or on anything, for that matter. However, over the course of her interactions with Shinji and Asuka, Rei slowly becomes more open, going from a friendless and near-emotionless girl to one who declares, "I am formed by interactions with others. They create me as I create them [....] That is what will continue to shape me."
