Character Analysis

(Avoiding Spoilers)

Grew Up… in the golden years of the 1950s. Still just a kid, Ralphie sees himself as a responsible young man – at least responsible enough to own a Red Ryder Carbine Action 200-shot Range Model BB gun.

Living… through the best season of the year. That’s right: “Lovely, glorious, beautiful Christmas, around which the entire Kid Year revolved.” The town of Hohman, Indiana, always seems to come alive this time of year.

Visiting… the local shopping mall to see Santa, or as he puts it, “The big man! The head honcho! The connection!” Ralphie has been coveting a Red Ryder BB gun for months, a gift that his mother highly disapproves of. He hopes that Santa, the man with the actual power, can grant his wish.

Interests… comic books and Westerns, like most kids his age. Both passions have inspired his desire for the famous Red Ryder BB gun. Ralphie envisions himself as a cowboy, holding off the bad guys; as an expert duck hunter; and more.

Challenge… getting ahold of one of those “fearsome blue steel beauties” for Christmas. It seems that there’s a “conspiracy of irrational prejudice against Red Ryder and his Peacemaker” around the Parker household. Everyone is insisting that Ralphie will shoot his eye out. In fact, non-Parker adults are saying the exact same thing. He’s tired of hearing it!

Personality… innocent, sweet and prone to daydreams. Ralphie is an all-American kid who just wants to have an all-American Christmas. Unfortunately, he’s so determined to get that gun that he’s thrown caution to the wind. His parents might be worried that he’ll shoot his eye out, but a BB gun isn’t the only disaster that can happen during the holiday season.
