Character Analysis

(Avoiding Spoilers)

Grew Up… with her parents and older sister Elizabeth. Her father was second in line to the throne and never expected to serve as King. But after his brother abdicated the throne to marry a divorced woman, they became the royal family. Margaret adored her father, and she feels lost since he died.

Profession... Princess and younger sister to Elizabeth, who is now Queen of England. Of the two sisters, Margaret seemed more suited to become Queen. Margaret is outspoken, sophisticated, and charming, while her sister Elizabeth is much more reserved. But the rules are the rules: birth order means everything.

Interests... playing the piano and singing. Sadly, the night before her beloved father died, they were singing a duet in front of an adoring audience. Even when Margaret is not singing, she’s a performer and loves the spotlight.

Relationship Status... madly in love with Captain Peter Townsend, a war hero who served for her father. Margaret and Peter became involved when he was married, but he loved Margaret so much he decided to divorce his wife. They have blissfully happy, and the press couldn’t get enough of their love story. It seemed that all the pieces were falling in place for them to live happily ever after, and her sister gave Margaret her blessing for the two to wed. But under pressure from others, her sister made a fateful decision that forever changed the relationship the two sisters had. The Queen told Margaret she would forfeit her royal rights and income and be forced to leave England for a minimum of five years if she married Peter. Margaret can’t help but suspect that her sister’s decision was made due to her jealousy of the attention they were getting as a couple. But without the support of her family and being forced to give up everything, Margaret has decided to call off the wedding. Margaret lashes out at her sister for her decision, saying "You fail to protect me. I will fail to protect you in return. You reap what you sow, sister."

Challenge... living in her sister’s shadow and being subjected to strict rules of British royalty. This is taking a toll on Margaret, riddling her with depression to the point that a cigarette and a drink are her only forms of relief.

Personality... alluring, witty, and spirited. When Margaret is happy, she is one of the most engaging people to be around. But she’s volatile, and Margaret can also show an angry side to her personality. There’s no middle ground for Margaret: she’s either up or down. And lately, she’s been on a downward spiral.
