Character Analysis

(Avoiding Spoilers)

Grew Up… with busy parents who weren’t always around for her and her siblings. Many parents have demanding careers, but it’s a whole other level when you mom is Queen of England.

Profession… working royal. Anne seems like a side character in a world dominated by Thatcher and Diana, but she has a lot more influence than initially perceived. The role she has been playing lately is being the on-call person for updates on Charles’ marriage with Diana with the press, and, in many ways, acting as Charles’ personal therapist as well.

Interests… pursuing a successful equestrian career and participating in a plethora of royal engagements. Anne is perhaps the hardest working member of the royal family whose achievements often go unnoticed. Although she’s not fond of pomp and circumstance, she takes her duties seriously.

Relationship Status… married to a fellow equestrian champion, Mark Phillips. Before she was married, she was briefly involved in a romantic relationship with Andrew Parker Bowles for what she describes as “a bit of fun.”

Challenge… dealing with the press who constantly invade her privacy and criticize her. She’s especially frustrated that she gets the short end of the stick when compared to Princess Diana. From Anne’s perspective, the press always says: “Lovely her, dumpy me. Smiling her, grumpy me. Charming her, awful me.”

Personality… strong-willed, private, and hard working. As a no-nonsense and low-key person, Anne is often uncomfortable in the spotlight—she prefers a private lifestyle with her horses and her family. However, despite her dislike for glamour and publicity, she’s not a shy person. She just doesn’t care about being popular or maintaining her public image as carefully as her mother. Ultimately, she’s the paradigm of straight-forwardness and inherits many traits form her mother and father, especially her work ethic as she works in the “heat and squalor of third world countries doing real work for real charities.”
