Character Analysis

(Avoiding Spoilers)

Grew Up… on the Greek island of Corfu as a Greek and Danish royal. Philips’ upbringing was challenging, to say the least. His family was exiled from Greece. His father left the family for his mistress. His mother was institutionalized and became a nun. And his beloved sister Cecile was killed with the rest of her family in a plane crash. At the age of eight, he was sent to boarding school to essentially grow up on his own. Philip has seen it all, and he’s tough as nails as a result. After all, what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger.

Living… in Buckingham Palace with his wife Elizabeth who is now Queen of England.

Profession… former officer for the British Navy. Prince Phillip served in the Royal Navy, the British Army, and the Royal Air Force until his wife’s coronation when he became husband to the Queen and father to the future king. Phillip’s main role is to encourage stability within the royal family to ensure it doesn’t suffer people’s wrath towards a monarchy during a revolution as he did during his childhood.

Interests… flying, hunting, sports, and drinking.

Relationship Status… complicated. Phillip had a successful career in the Royal Navy and a happy marriage until King George VI’s death. But now Phillip is adjusting to his role as the only husband in the world who must kneel before his wife. Phillip feels this is threatening his masculinity and his honor, and he’s trying his best to support his wife for the good of the country. But he may need some female attention from someone other than his wife to get through this.

Challenge… helping his young wife navigate through endless crises. Elizabeth was only 25 years old when she became Queen, and she wasn’t prepared for the life she is leading now. She never thought her father as King would die so young, and he wasn’t supposed to be King anyway; his brother abdicated the throne to marry a divorced woman. Elizabeth is finding herself dealing with uprisings, betrayals, family crises, all while she is trying to raise a family of her own. With everyone around her vying for power including the “dreaded mustaches” such as Tommy Lascelles, she finds the only person she can really trust to give her honest advice is Philip. While their marriage may not be perfect, Elizabeth is lucky to have Philip by her side.

Personality… stubborn, proud, and free-spirited. Phillip doesn’t handle fools and is rarely found extending his patience toward anyone who questions him. He’s an adventurous soul, but he’s having a hard time pursuing anything that he used to love given the constraints required of the monarchy. He’s coming to realize the importance of his role in helping to shape the country he loves.
