Ofelia

Grew Up... on fairytales. Ofelia has always been an imaginative child, and although she's getting older, she retains her belief in magic and fairies.

Living... in fascist Spain. The year is 1944, and dictator Francisco Franco has just risen to power after a bloody civil war. But with fighting still rampant, Spain is a dangerous place. So in order to keep stay alive, Ofelia's mother marries Captain Vidal, a fascist, who promises Carmen and her daughter safety in exchange for an heir. Yet despite Vidal's fearful temper, Ofelia refuses to bow to his wishes or recognize him as her parent, telling him "my father was a tailor."

Profession... princess of the underworld. After meeting a mysterious Faun, Ofelia is told she is actually Princess Moanna, lost among humans after birth but now ready to take back her throne.

Interests... fairytales, magic, and helping those she loves. Although Ofelia might dislike her stepfather – and for good reason, too – she's deeply loyal to Mercedes, Vidal's housekeeper, and to her mother. When Carmen's pregnancy faces complications, Ofelia is similarly pained, and she turns to the underworld for help.

Relationship Status... single. Ofelia might love fairytales, but since she hasn't hit puberty yet, she's not that interested in the "Prince Charming" part of her stories right now. Living with Vidal, though, Ofelia might not live long enough to become interested.

Challenge... proving herself worthy of the underworld. When the Faun tells Ofelia her true identity, it comes with one condition: in order to return to the underworld, Ofelia must first pass a series of tests to prove she hasn't been corrupted by her time among humans. They are not easy tasks, bringing Ofelia face-to-face with some of the deadliest creatures of the underworld, but she refuses to be cowed. As she tells one of these creatures: "Hello. I am Princess Moanna, and I am not afraid of you."

Personality... imaginative, curious, and kind. Young and naive enough to still believe in fairies, Ofelia is a sweet girl who, despite her harsh circumstances, wants nothing more than to help others. Amidst the background of war-torn Spain, Ofelia's innocence stands out, making her a true princess in more than just name.
