Character Analysis

(Avoiding Spoilers)

Living... mysteriously. He’s got an office in Washington, D.C. at the headquarters of the covert government agency S.H.I.E.L.D. But other than that, pretty much everything about Nick Fury’s personal life is a mystery.

Visiting... quite literally anywhere. Fury’s job at S.H.I.E.L.D. takes him around the world, from Tony Stark’s skyscraper in New York to the remote European country of Sokovia. He’s most often found in the sky on his massive flying helicarrier.

Profession... Director of S.H.I.E.L.D., the acronym for the “Strategic Homeland Intervention, Enforcement and Logistics Division.” That means Fury handles the problems that regular people – and even regular governments – aren’t ready to hear about. From collecting alien technology to spying on other covert agencies to keeping track of the super-powered humans who keep popping up in his world, there’s no “normal” day at S.H.I.E.L.D. Fury’s job is part super spy, part diplomat – he’s regularly negotiating with the bureaucratic World Security Council and trying to keep temperamental superheroes in check.

Interests... playing with advanced tech, delivering one-liners, and putting together his Avengers Initiative – a group of superheroes designed to fight the battles that S.H.I.E.L.D. can’t.

Relationship Status... single, probably. Nick Fury’s line of work is far too dangerous to allow for a personal life. Of course, he’s so guarded it’s hard to tell.

Challenge... protecting the world – in secret. Fury’s first priority is to ensure the world’s survival both from Earth-grown threats and whatever alien forces may be out there. He once told a god-like alien, “You have made me very desperate. You might not be glad that you did." Most importantly, Fury has to do his job without causing a panic by exposing these massive threats to the public.

Personality... decisive, capable, wry, and principled. The only thing sharper than Nick’s marksmanship is his wry sense of humor.  It’s his job to make the tough calls no one else can and he’s learned to trust his instincts and follow his principles. He’s an immensely capable, no-nonsense leader who takes zero guff from anyone. He once explained, “S.H.I.E.L.D. takes the world as it is, not as we'd like it to be.” On the other hand, he can be very idealistic, especially in his belief in the Avengers.
