Character Analysis

(Avoiding Spoilers)

Grew up… surrounded by dead people. As the son of a funeral home director, Nate is used to death’s aura. He was raised to be comfortable around corpses, but that doesn’t mean that Nate is at peace with his own fate.

Living… back home, in Los Angeles. Since his father’s death, Nate has decided to give up his life in Seattle and re-settle at his home. Though things have been getting complicated ever since Nathaniel Sr.’s funeral. As Nate puts it, “My father’s dead, my mom’s a whore, my brother wants to kill me, and my sister’s smoking crack.”

Profession… mortician. Nate has gone from peddling healthy food as assistant manager at Seattle’s “highest volume food co-op” to comforting the families of the dead at Fisher & Sons funeral home. That puts Nate somewhat uneasily alongside his younger brother David, who had already entered the family business before his father’s death – and resented Nate for not doing so.

Relationship Status… involved with a woman he met on his flight home for Christmas, before he even learned that his dad was dead. Brenda and Nate got in deep very quickly, and their chance meeting has led to an on-again-off-again relationship.

Challenge… finding himself and settling down. Nate has been running away from his family ever since he left for college. Now that circumstances have drawn him back to the funeral home, he has to find a way to be happy with the way his life ended up: “I spent my whole life being scared. Scared of not being ready, of not being right, of not being who I should be. And where did it get me?”

Personality… lost and aimless, yet charming. Nate has only ever been successful at seducing women and having a good time, but now that he’s found some purpose with running the family business, he’s beginning to confront life’s deeper questions. “I’m just saying you only get one life,” he says. “There’s no God, no rules, except for those you accept or create for yourself. Then once it’s over, it’s over. Dreamless sleep forever and ever. So why not be happy while you’re here?”
