Character Analysis

(Avoiding Spoilers)

Grew Up… in the Zhao state during the Qin reign in China’s Warring States period. As he puts it, “I was orphaned at a young age and was never given a name. People simply called me Nameless. With no family name to live up to, I devoted myself to the sword.”

Visiting…the state capital of Qin. Following an attempt on the life of the emperor by the assassins Long Sky, Flying Snow, and Broken Sword, no one can approach the emperor directly without first showing that they have slain the assassins. Nameless claims to have killed all three assassins, and has all three of their attributive weapons as proof. But why does he seek the emperor’s counsel?

Profession… warrior and prefect. Nameless is undoubtedly skilled. He is as good with the sword as anyone. He is quick, smart, and strong. After undergoing a series of trials imposed on him by other Zhao warriors, it is clear that he is capable of defeating any man or woman in single combat.

Interests… none. The nameless hero is completely stoical.

Challenge… gaining access to the emperor. As he approaches the emperor and tells his story, he is forced to reckon with the nature of war and peace, and how the former should make way for the latter. The nameless hero is technically the greatest warrior, yet he has not yet realized that “a warrior's ultimate act is to lay down his sword.”

Personality… skillful, measured, and devoid of emotion. Nameless is focused, determined, and almost without personality. He is a fighting machine, but he needs to work on finding some soul – to discover the man within the machine.
