Character Analysis
(Avoiding Spoilers)
Grew Up… with his younger brother Scar, destined to be king of the Pride Lands. Mufasa was the obvious alpha male in the pride, and this was always a point of jealousy for Scar. A kind of Cain and Abel dynamic blossomed unhealthily between the two brothers.
Living… as king of Pride Rock and all the land it overlooks. All animals of the kingdom from giraffe to wildebeest bow in honor of Mufasa. His new son Simba is destined to take over the throne after Mufasa passes, and thus he spends a great deal of his time trying to teach Simba how to grow into a proud lion and just ruler.
Profession… king. Mufasa is not just king of the lions, but of all animals within his kingdom. It is his responsibility to make sure no one goes into the Elephant Graveyard, where evil hyenas lurk. When Simba does go, Mufasa has to save him – and then scold him. “You deliberately disobeyed me!” Mufasa booms.
Interests… his family, his kingdom, and his bird servant, Zazu. Mufasa enjoys Zazu’s banter and sarcastic sense of humor.
Relationship Status… married to Sarabi, the mother of Simba. Sarabi rules as something of a queen, though ultimate power belongs in the hands of Mufasa. Still, Mufasa clearly has a great respect for her opinion.
Challenge… grooming Simba for the throne. And Mufasa’s challenge is not just to get Simba to be king – but to raise him into a good one. With constant pressure from outside forces, Simba is conflicted with following all the rules required of a young prince. Mufasa needs to instill his rationality and responsibility in Simba.
Personality… powerful, loud, and occasionally temperamental. Mufasa loses his temper when Simba disobeys him, but that’s only because he was afraid he might lose Simba. His love for his cub, and for the entire pride, is very deep. Mufasa would do anything for them.
